Nick Mohammed - The Forer Factor

A one man character sketch show, Nick Mohammed begins The Forer Factor by miming — somewhat poorly — to a pre-recorded audio monologue track before introducing the audience to a variety of his live characters. The namesake of Nick Mohammed’s performance is not fully explored and seems an afterthought to the performance as a whole. While he does not lack enthusiasm or projection, each individual character study fails to retain a consistency of development. He clearly knows his material well and has no trouble jumping between personalities, but the more enjoyable performance moments occur when he says nothing at all, but rather reacts to a eclectic mix of sounds played over the PA. Nothing in his performance is particularly new and though amateurish in general, Nick Mohammed has a few minutes of greatness sprinkled throughout his time on stage. Stick with it to see his unique ventriloquist segment and stay to the end for possibly the best of his act — a music conductor. All of the characters are quite different from each other, but most are fairly forgettable. (Thank goodness I take notes.).

Nick Mohammed has enough enthusiasm and expression to pull off a much better show. I didn’t enjoy all of The Forer Factor, but the parts I did like give me hope that Nick Mohammed has enough promise to pull off a much better and tighter show next year.

The sassiness of the show title belies the endearing fragility of this highly strung, warm, likeable New Yorker. Subtle and bawdy by turns, Canderas mulls over the traumas of childhood in a dysfunctional Irish Catholic family; her “quest to be a regular lady”; and finally coping with life as an older widow whose sexuality is still a vital part of her identity. We get the impression that, post-widowhood and the children leaving the nest, she is less concerned about behaving like a “regular lady” and more about gathering the last of the rosebuds, although she does draw the line at posting a photo of herself on Internet dating sites, “just in case the children see it”. Despite a bit of gentle fun poked at fragile male bedroom egos, the men in the audience seemed to be laughing just as loudly as the women. A memorable show.

Go see this show if for no other reason than the pleasure seeing three promising youngsters. It’s like seeing a clip of Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie and the likes from their turn at the Fringe: skills and charms oozing from every poor and careers in the making from the word go.

Robert Peel, JackWhitehall and Charlotte Perking have written and perform their own show and they do it well. The mixture of sketches and stand-up is refreshing, well paced and range from portrayal of a prep-boy gone rap to a well-meaning, but rather dim aid worker on her guitar to Joseph and Mary meeting an inn-keeper sure the “sentimental value of your child is through the roof.”

I could, and feel like, mentioning every scene, but you will find out when you go and see for yourself, as you rightly should. These kids are cool and professional enough to take any fear of looking silly and just going with it. As if to prove the “cool” point they add Johnny Cash to any breaks for good measure. Class.

Hunter is an engaging and skilfull storyteller, and this show had people rolling in their seats more or less from start to finish. He’s an African-American now living in London, and was good-naturedly resigned to regularly being mistaken for one of (the small number of) the UK’s other famous black men, accused every other week of being Lenny Henry.

Although occasionally verging on stereotypical views of male/female relations (another version of ‘Does my bum look big in this?’), he’s an intelligent and thought-provoking comic who’s not above making himself the butt of a joke. His skill at building the tension in a story meant that you could hear the proverbial pin drop at times. Warmly recommended- I’d buy him a pint!

Mette started this set of “two halves” with an onslaught on cultural foibles in her “comedy of conscience” – a strong start to a solid set including a bit of anthem singing and some very funny physical comedy to really grab everyone.

She displayed guts: The leader of the Taliban should respect his mother as without her he would have been “a sperm cell up a camel’s arse”. And she displayed flair: an early joke about how the German invasion of Denmark had happened with the dropping of fliers to say as much, was later neatly tied in with prolific gospel letter writer Paul: imagine what kind of invasions he could have caused!

Omar was a very different kettle of fish opening this preview night with: “you are going to be my test audience”, “jokes don’t translate well”, and branding himself a bit of “a hate buffet” being Muslim, Danish and speaking with an American accent. A quite unusual way to win over an audience and getting laughs for sure.

With charm Omar soldiered on and got his laughs; some by repeatedly scoring out lesser jokes from his script and some with more self-effacing jokes like “calling all my friends…. but he wasn’t home”.

Any concerns about language skills were misplaced: with a word play on not wanting to run on the tube and risking to be “dead on time”…….Omar is clearly of Egyptian heritage…… he clearly knew English well. It’s his audience and material which need fine tuning…..Still he got close enough to the audience and kindly offered a “thank you” for being his guinea pigs.

Mette 1- Omar 0
