And the final show is here - after almost a full month of podcasting every day, reporting from the streets of Edinburgh, finding the interviews and scoping out the shows to bring you the best of Scotland’s capital. I hope that if you were in Edinburgh the show pointed you to what you might want to take in, and if you never made it, I hope that you got a flavour of just how manic the Fringe is.

Thanks must go to The Stage - who have been a great partner for the podcast, and the working relationship between TPN and The Stage has been one of the key facts that have made the podcast work as well as it has.

Hear you next year?

Nick Mohammed - The Forer Factor

A one man character sketch show, Nick Mohammed begins The Forer Factor by miming — somewhat poorly — to a pre-recorded audio monologue track before introducing the audience to a variety of his live characters. The namesake of Nick Mohammed’s performance is not fully explored and seems an afterthought to the performance as a whole. While he does not lack enthusiasm or projection, each individual character study fails to retain a consistency of development. He clearly knows his material well and has no trouble jumping between personalities, but the more enjoyable performance moments occur when he says nothing at all, but rather reacts to a eclectic mix of sounds played over the PA. Nothing in his performance is particularly new and though amateurish in general, Nick Mohammed has a few minutes of greatness sprinkled throughout his time on stage. Stick with it to see his unique ventriloquist segment and stay to the end for possibly the best of his act — a music conductor. All of the characters are quite different from each other, but most are fairly forgettable. (Thank goodness I take notes.).

Nick Mohammed has enough enthusiasm and expression to pull off a much better show. I didn’t enjoy all of The Forer Factor, but the parts I did like give me hope that Nick Mohammed has enough promise to pull off a much better and tighter show next year.

There may be critically acclaimed productions, with perfect script writing, world class actors and stylish direction exhibited by many Fringe Theatre shows - and while Top Gun at C is lacking in those areas, it more than makes up for it with a KC-135 Tanker full of enthusiasm.

What we have here is soemthing that was dreamt up at 2am in the morning, and someone else having a lightbulb moment… and thus the stage is set for a squadron of F-14 jets to take to the stage in a show tht sums up what the Fringe can be about - taking a concept, pushing it like crazy and seeing if you can make a hit show. And while there’s no colun inches being burned, the cast plant their tounge into their cheek just enough to be a pastiche, but not enough to be a serious homage. This is probably the one criticism of the show - what exactly is the goal?

If they can answer that, then student unions the world over have a headline act. And if they can raise enough money, I ‘d love to see how well this would work as a movie…

Is this the final stretch? Of course it is. But that just means there are two and a half weeks of intruige and gossip to help find the best acts and shows out there. And, in its own little way, the Fringe Podcast is contributing to that. And talking a bit about controversial material, cartoons, and winning the World Cup…

The sassiness of the show title belies the endearing fragility of this highly strung, warm, likeable New Yorker. Subtle and bawdy by turns, Canderas mulls over the traumas of childhood in a dysfunctional Irish Catholic family; her “quest to be a regular lady”; and finally coping with life as an older widow whose sexuality is still a vital part of her identity. We get the impression that, post-widowhood and the children leaving the nest, she is less concerned about behaving like a “regular lady” and more about gathering the last of the rosebuds, although she does draw the line at posting a photo of herself on Internet dating sites, “just in case the children see it”. Despite a bit of gentle fun poked at fragile male bedroom egos, the men in the audience seemed to be laughing just as loudly as the women. A memorable show.

You are welcomed to Crunch by a sweet guitarist enquiring to your health and if the audience had fruit for breakfast? Enter the apple.

Then there’s the Adam and Eve apple, the Newton apple, an apple Jack called John, Wilhelm Tell and Snow white. There are songs, some funnier than others, and funny lines: “can’t tell Wilhelm Tell from Adam”, and this you have to see to get, but somehow “I’ve got an apple on my head” works a treat too.

All along Adam and Eve is trying to replace the apple Eve ate and the audiences tuning into a plethora of accents – a handful for the dwarfs alone. Of the four actors at play it’s clear the guitarist/God/apple Jack/Austrian vice-regent Gessler/a mirror image and the snake/Newton/Wilhelm Tell/evil queen are the two stronger, but they all do a fair bit of hamming it up – it is revue after all - to a hilarious outcome for anyone into revue/musical/theatre….and sometimes there’s an apple for you too.

Tango doesn’t entirely describe the balletic grace with which they flew through their moves. The long-legged sinuous grace of the female dancers contrasted with the macho gangster chic of the men: with their black hair fairly dripping with brilliantine, they looked like they had just stepped out of a speakeasy.

The quartet which provided the music were also very engaging, featuring the most passionate accordion playing this reviewer has ever heard (something I used to think was an oxymoron). This is a hugely enjoyable show which left the audience shouting for more.

No-one envies the task of a little-known comedian trying to warm up a small audience early on in the Festival, but Tony Law did a fine job, drawing us out of the drab theatre and into a surreal world of sausage dogs, worm holes and hula hoops.

Two ‘country hick’ personas, one white South African, concealed a more serious environmental agenda, although Law’s green politics come sandwiched between his more surreal perceptions of the world. Apparently, “many of you will have experienced what it feels like to be a giant”. Law’s stabs at bigotry and head-in-the-sand politics got big laughs, but it is some of his sillier remarks that still make me smile at odd moments: after all, why is it only the wolves that look after abandoned human babies?

This project is about what happens when a play has two different directors for two casts in two different venues. Cut wasn’t much shorter and actually referred to the writer having cut the umbilical cord to the play she wrote by giving it to another director. She directed the Uncut version herself.

The play tells the story of a woman struggling to cope when her cheating husband has a stroke and she feels obligated to care for him. The afternoon show Cut was missing in humour and an altogether drab experience. The evening showing of Uncut, however, immediately presented a funny, sad, warm and troubling play and an all together engaging experience. Neither performance had a clearly defined ending, but at least the Bedlam audiences didn’t need to be prompted with bows….

It wasn’t the different venues, but simply that the Attic ensemble couldn’t carry the piece without the set or direction of the Bedlam performance. The good performances were the exception in the Attic with the Australian nurse, the husband after the stroke and the brave Audrey Tautou Look-a-like actor struggling to make the woman come alive. At the Bedlam it was the other way around where one minor male part could have done with some improvement.

The experience of the two plays was as black and white as the costumes chosen for both performances – you could argue the baby died once the umbilical cord got cut.

Should you still go see both as a complete project? I actually think you should. And see Uncut first as Cut makes no sense otherwise.

The story is well known thanks to the book, the movie, the poster and an unscripted I’m walking here from Dustin Hoffman. Add to that the knowledge of the Director John Clancy and the writer Tim Fountain, my expectations were stacked up.

I wasn’t even in a particularly good mood and the initial country tunes didn’t bode well. Tops 3 minutes later I was hooked. The songs changed to Dylan and particularly actors Charles Aitken (Joe) and Con O’Neill (Ratzo) gave their all. Other characters equally erased memories from the pages and celluloid and I recommend this play to anyone over 16 as well done sex scene doesn’t deserve their nervous giggles.

The stage setting deserves a mention: it’s swiftly and seamlessly changed, and perfectly befitting this essentially timeless story of two outcasts finding comfort in each other. At the end many were sniffling and if not for the lights coming up, the applause would deservedly have lasted a bit longer.

Time for another show - and I’m in the middle of unpacking and sorting out the broadband after moving house, so I’ll leave you in the capable hands of three of the poofs from Jonathan Ross, and the velvet gravelly voice of Jeff Innocent.

While you are listening to today’s Podcast (and when you have a radio mind-reader on the royal Mile, an ex-Celebrity Big Brother housemate making sure I leave a woooooooooooo in the final edit, and someone’s who’s life story is deservedly in The Times Top 10 Best Seller list, you know it’s going to be a good one) have a little bit of consideration for yours truly.

Thanks to the greatest scheduling conflict the Fringe Podcast has seen, I’ll be moving house today. Vans, boxes, lifting furniture and playing Tetris with the packing. So enjoy today and tomorrow as I take a very small break from going into the city, but rtest assured you’ll still have a ‘cast tomorrow morning!

Okay, today’s show is made up of the weird - Reggie Watts is a musician with one downright crazy instrument - his voice on loopback. Except he improvises it. And Andrew Stanley (along with Damian Clark) have no idea what show they’re doing from day to day. The audience challenge them to do the craziest things in the world.

Week two is here, and it feels like the podcast has been going on forever, yet we’re not even at the half way mark (that will be the start of Wednesday’s show). So there’s still a lot of shows, guests and little snippets to bring to you over the next fortnight.

This ‘middle monday’ is traditionally the day that performers will have as their dayoff (although some will go on stage tonight and then rest up on Tuesday) so if you are going out tonight, watch the program very carefully. There will be shows on, but not all of them.

It’s the weekend! Fringe Sunday tomorrow on the meadows, and of course the return of the Sunday Supplement here at the Edinburgh Fringe Show. I’ll be spending most of tomorrow catching up on the interviews and updating the diary to take in the big shows for week two, so catch up with me again on Monday. Until then though, one of the most talked about shows at the Fringe is in the studio - where else would you get Top Gun, on stage. other than Edinburgh?

You get to the gallery and the first impression is of a quiet and nice neighbourhood. Then you enter. Up to the first floor you are immediately hit by the bright, lively and simplistic paintings of Leif Sylvester, a Danish painter and all round artist. It is indeed a very fitting exhibition for a festival, and your mood is immediately turned up a few notches.

Not all paintings are of equally joyful themes, but you realize even a telling to, as portrayed in one painting, and the theme of the painting named “Teacher Torture”, are manageable when presented like this: Dots, lines, stripes, checks, pastels, black, drips and precise lines – most on every painting too – makes for a new experience all of Sylvester’s making.

Combined with some skilfully crafted pottery two artists (one young award winning Marco Friis) in the entrance hall, it’s well worth the trip that wee bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Free at The Danish Cultural Institute, 3 Doune Terrace weekdays from 9am-5pm

Go see this show if for no other reason than the pleasure seeing three promising youngsters. It’s like seeing a clip of Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie and the likes from their turn at the Fringe: skills and charms oozing from every poor and careers in the making from the word go.

Robert Peel, JackWhitehall and Charlotte Perking have written and perform their own show and they do it well. The mixture of sketches and stand-up is refreshing, well paced and range from portrayal of a prep-boy gone rap to a well-meaning, but rather dim aid worker on her guitar to Joseph and Mary meeting an inn-keeper sure the “sentimental value of your child is through the roof.”

I could, and feel like, mentioning every scene, but you will find out when you go and see for yourself, as you rightly should. These kids are cool and professional enough to take any fear of looking silly and just going with it. As if to prove the “cool” point they add Johnny Cash to any breaks for good measure. Class.

Flamboyant, engaging, jaw-dropping, ascerbic: just some of the adjectives that spring to mind when you see this diminutive star with the giant personality. From Tina Turner to Judy Garland, Cher to Neil Diamond, Jimmy sailed from one diva identity to the next with shimmering ease. His Eartha Kit was unmistakable, his Billie Holiday spooky; Bette Davis was a bawdy riot, my personal favourite, and he can do Barbara Streisand to a T (whether that’s something to aspire to is debatable). He combined fabulous singing with a bit of gentle ridicule, marvelling at the Scots’ ability to drink and singling out the grumpiest looking couple in the audience to terrorise. (”You mean you don’t drink at all? That’s why the show made no sense at all to you!”) He also struck just the right note of camp humility, decribing his performance as “a work in progress”. Go see him, you won’t regret it.

Hunter is an engaging and skilfull storyteller, and this show had people rolling in their seats more or less from start to finish. He’s an African-American now living in London, and was good-naturedly resigned to regularly being mistaken for one of (the small number of) the UK’s other famous black men, accused every other week of being Lenny Henry.

Although occasionally verging on stereotypical views of male/female relations (another version of ‘Does my bum look big in this?’), he’s an intelligent and thought-provoking comic who’s not above making himself the butt of a joke. His skill at building the tension in a story meant that you could hear the proverbial pin drop at times. Warmly recommended- I’d buy him a pint!

This is the one-woman portrayal of a real-life tragedy: how a young American peace activist died tried trying to help the beleagered Palestinians. The drama traces the personal journey which took Rachel to Palestine, and ultimately to her brutal end under an Israeli bulldozer. A bleak rubble-filled urban backdrop, coupled with the sinister sound of artillery in the background combine to maintain the tension throughout this moving and harrowing play.

It is a considerable feat for one actress to carry the whole drama so convincingly, although it must be said that the play was simply too long for some people. Although moved to tears at points, my sympathy with the main character began to evaporate during what felt like the endless diatribe at the end. The writer is passionate and understandably angry, but the length of the show (90 minutes) diluted the power of the message.

The fun at Edinburgh continues, and I managed to spend an hour walking up and down the Royal Smile yesterday. Thanks to Gods Pottery I love that little addition to the name of the famous Festival street! And to answer a comment from the show, Gods Pottery are a spoof - but a very very convincing one!

Today’s podcast shows the diversity of Edinburgh at this time of year. We’ve got an old character favourite in John Shuttleworth at the movies, a double bill of plays from Los Angeles, and a new rough and ready comedy that’s getting polished through performance on stage.

I think it would be fair to say that in John Kielty, the Fringe has found the 21st century’s Child Catcher. Playing the titular role as part Faust, part Bela Lugois and part Vincent Price, the Dream Dealer uses his addictive ice creams to capture the souls of the unwary school children looking to escape real life in the world of dreams.

For the adults in the audience, the metaphor is easily recognised, but the cast (aged between between 10-14, John Kielty and Jonny Field being the only adults) carry this musical with enthusiasm and passion. Seeing the troop thoroughly enjoying themselves is as much a part of the Fringe as the stand-ups travelling up from London. Particular mention goes out to our hero, Finn (Alex Palmer), who manages the solo songs with aplomb, and carries the emotions and frustrations as he watches his school mates, who start out as the all-singing all dancing troupe that you’d expect, slowly become enthralled and addicted to the Dream Dealer’s Iced Dreams.

But, you go away thinking that for all the musical numbers, for all the strong messages, for all the upbeat cheery numbers, it is the evil of John Kielty scaring an entire audience as he descends from the stage into the aisles that will stay with you and haunt you in the mornings.

Recommend for ages of around 9 to 14 for the message, and all other ages for the spectacle.

There’s a fair amount of religious based shows at the Fringe - which isn;t surprising as religion is something that has impacted, in some way, on everyone’s life. So following on from yesterdays ‘will I won’t I’ pairing of Gods Pottery and The Heretic, Ryan Paulson talks about his life and the effect of the Pentecostal Church on him. While on the other hand Sean Collins’ life has been a massive roller coaster, and he’s wondering if it’s time to slow down and step into family life 110%

And so it begins - not the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast, but the actual Fringe. Yes, everything that has gone before in the last week has technically been the preview week, it’s only now that we get to the first day in the first week. Talk about crazy - but that pretty much sums up the Fringe perfectly.

It’s a great show today; we have music from the wholesome boys that are Gods Pottery (and I ask about their life goals and concerts); our first ‘Performers Diary’ from one of the biggest stars on the UK circuit, Stephen K Amos (he’ll be calling in with his diary throughout August); and the writing team behind The Heretic.

Comments are welcome, just add them in below, or you can email me at ewan@thepodcastnetwork.com if you’re shy!

A little diversion now for the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast, as I take a day away from the microphone and hand it over to Stewart Lochhead, host of the ‘Funky’ Sunday Supplement show. Join Stewart, and guest hosts Gay Bell, Bob Flynn and Norrie Stewart as they discuss and review a number of shows around all the Edinburgh Festivals, bring in some local music from McBrandy, and bring a relaxed Sunday lunchtime chill to the Podcast. I’ll be back tomorrow morning with your regular Fringe Pdocast, but until then… enjoy.

What a manic day or two - it’s been packed with press previews and chock full of recording interviews. The previews are funny beasts, 5 minute highlight packagaes for the Press (with some tickets sold to the public) at the larger venues showcasing the top acts. And, hand on heart, there are now some acts that I defintly want to see, and some knocked off the list as well - once you see five minutes of a one trick pony, you’re done. Much to look forawrd to for me (and you) in August!

Mette started this set of “two halves” with an onslaught on cultural foibles in her “comedy of conscience” – a strong start to a solid set including a bit of anthem singing and some very funny physical comedy to really grab everyone.

She displayed guts: The leader of the Taliban should respect his mother as without her he would have been “a sperm cell up a camel’s arse”. And she displayed flair: an early joke about how the German invasion of Denmark had happened with the dropping of fliers to say as much, was later neatly tied in with prolific gospel letter writer Paul: imagine what kind of invasions he could have caused!

Omar was a very different kettle of fish opening this preview night with: “you are going to be my test audience”, “jokes don’t translate well”, and branding himself a bit of “a hate buffet” being Muslim, Danish and speaking with an American accent. A quite unusual way to win over an audience and getting laughs for sure.

With charm Omar soldiered on and got his laughs; some by repeatedly scoring out lesser jokes from his script and some with more self-effacing jokes like “calling all my friends…. but he wasn’t home”.

Any concerns about language skills were misplaced: with a word play on not wanting to run on the tube and risking to be “dead on time”…….Omar is clearly of Egyptian heritage…… he clearly knew English well. It’s his audience and material which need fine tuning…..Still he got close enough to the audience and kindly offered a “thank you” for being his guinea pigs.

Mette 1- Omar 0

Man must eat, especially bewtween all the Festial events, so we sent out one of our intrepid reporters, Kirsten Nielsen, to discover some of the new venues around Edinburgh to dine out on. Here’s her thoughts on Bakara, The Pit Cafe, and Momma Cherri’s Soul Food Shack.

Baraka
3-5 Infirmary Street.

Northern Africa is the main influence for this bar/restaurant/nightclub combo and like in a medina, it’s amazing what they manage to squeeze in:

In the restaurant area there’s room for 40 at dinner tables and another 20 on stools around low tables. The stools is to create space, but means back-breaking seats and people moving close by, so try to pre-book for decent dining. The food you are treated to is in line with the theme and from what I saw and tasted it’s fully sufficient and nice looking.

“Theme” and “sufficient” describes the interior too: It’s like it’s been handled by yards of framed material, the stools and coat of paint “African coloured”. There’s a theatrical alcove with velvety, deep seating in the night club – very Miami-night-club “Beds” – except overall you come away feeling “expense spared”.

The music promotion offers as broad a spectre as the establishment: “hot mix of “afroboogiediscotechhouseelectrosouljazzlatinfunk”. With the location and a few drinks promotions before 10pm added on, it could be just the place for a typically mixed festival gang looking for a place with late license.

The Pit Cafe
Pleasance Dome

The Dome is looking better and more active earlier on than in recent years. With the menu and prices of the pit café outlet I’d go as far as to say it’s worth taking a breather and watch the world go by here while getting a bite – the nachos looked fine and there were lots on the plate for just under £3. The salads, paninis, muffins and cakes are a little more expensive, but their strawberry tart good at £1.60.

Not only that I could get soya milk in my reasonably priced coffee to go with it, it was served by a nice young woman, the manageress shared a laugh and there’s a stage near by for live music! If this all gets too much you just ask for one of their freshly pressed juices and get on with life refreshed and replenished.

Momma Cherri’s Soul Food Shack
Pleasance Dome

Before lunch: Southern food for the masses -Yee haaaa! After lunch: ee aaaa?

“Soul in a Bowl” is the catch phrase - £3 gets you one bowl and £5 gets you two. So I decided on two: “Succulent Catfish Goujons” and “Cornbread”, but changed to “Baby-back Ribs in Momma’s own BBQ sauce” with “Cajun Potato Wedges” once I saw how sad the goujons looked.

Unfortunately cold sauce on one and a half plain rib with absolutely plain chips wasn’t any better. And an offer to microwave heat just wasn’t worth it for this one wee plastic bowl (paid for two), plastic fork and its content.

I can’t imagine the swearing this would have required when Charita Jones a.k.a. Momma Cherri was on Ramsay’s “Kitchen Nightmares”. And this place is part of “Edinburgh Food Festival”? I’ve had better Southern food in the kind of fast food chain we love to hate while in Mississippi.

The good name of “wedges”, “Southern”, “Soul” and me were all ripped off and if not for the great lady serving me, I would have given it right back.

It can’t but get better.

Yes it’s eleven months since last year’s Fringe finished, so that can only mean it’s time for the traditional Week 0 of The Fringe - Preview Week. Which also means it’s time for the previews to start again. As I get to see more shows and pick up the rumour mill in all the bars, pubs and press rooms around Edinburgh, I’ll be able to track down who’s going to be hot or not at the Festival this year (hmmm, now there’s an idea for a reviews website…).

For the moment though, I’ll have to rely on my gut feeling, and that means the pairing of Gemma and Paul and their Beginners Guide to the Fringe (featuring on today’s show) is going to do well. It might not headline anywhere, but it’s the perfect slice of comedy action that should fit in most people’s schedule.
And of course, there are questions about the Fringe itself - and who better to answer them than the man who’s in charge of the Fringe Society? I spent some time with Paul Gudgin at the start of the week to ask about the Fringe, its roots, how it has expanded (and is expanding), how much public money he thinks the Fringe needs… and if he’d touch the 2012 Olympics with a barge pole.

As always, feel free to leave comments on this website, or if you’re a bit shy (or want to give me some times without shouting it out to everyone) then email me, ewan@thepodcastnetwork.com.

This is it, the last “during the Fringe” podcast from 2005. Enjoy it, because when it’s gone it’s gone. Although I will admit to having a tear in my eye when I finished the FTP on this file, I’mnot quite sure if I’mlooking forward to doing it all again next year - I bet that’s how all the performers feel as well!

David McSavage - I Need £4,800 Pounds
A simple show title for a comedian - that’s how much coming to the Fringe costs me, that’ll be my show. I finally caught up with David on the Royal Mile after he had done a mix of flyering and busking to ask about the show.

Tom Pringe - Dr Bunhead’s Recipes for Disaster
From UK TV’s Brainiac: Science Abuse show comes Tom Pringe (aka Dr Bunhead) with a madcap science show primarily aimed at kids, but suitable for everyone. And there’s some lessons in this interview as well. For example, what happens when you breath Xenon. How can you turn a bottle of coke into a water pistol with a polo mint? And what’s the biggest thing Tom has blown up in the name of “science?”

And as a special treat, there’s the full length version of the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast theme tune to close out the last Festival show of 2005. See you next year?
