iFringe – the independent guide to the Edinburgh Fringe for the Apple iPhone – and The Edinburgh Fringe Podcast have announced a major collaboration for this year’s Festival.

A unique new venture from six of the Fringe’s leading independent reviewers, iFringe brings together reviews, video and interviews from across the Fringe – all delivered in one convenient, up-to-the-minute package, straight to the iPhone. Making full use of the iPhone’s ground-breaking technology, iFringe highlights nearby shows with good reviews, guides Fringe-goers smoothly through the practicalities, and points out special offers from participating venues.

The BAFTA-nominated Edinburgh Fringe Podcast, hosted and produced by Ewan Spence for The Stage and The Podcast Network, is now in its fifth year of daily coverage from the Fringe. Featuring the latest news from around the capital, interviews with performers and stories from behind the scenes – plus, now, a daily recommendation to be powered by iFringe – the show brings the Fringe to every MP3 player, computer and smartphone on the planet. It’s no wonder it was the #2 arts podcast during last years Fringe, only beaten by The Archers (nobody’s brave enough to take on the army of Ambridge fans!)

"The synergy of iFringe’s index of reviews on the iPhone, and the Fringe Podcast’s long tradition of working with Apple and the podcasting community, is obvious," pointed out Ewan Spence – Vice-President at The Podcast Network and the show’s host. "iFringe will put one of the most exciting and critically-acclaimed shows about the Fringe at the fingertips of every iPhone owner in Edinburgh."

"We’re delighted to welcome another high-quality, independent partner to iFringe", said Richard Stamp, co-founder of FringeGuru Ltd. "iFringe is all about using new technology to guide you to the best of the Festival – and now we’ll be guiding you to the best podcast, too. Alongside traditional reviews from the likes of ThreeWeeks, and video clips from Festival Previews, The Fringe Show completes a modern multi-media line-up that’s truly fit for the iPhone."

iFringe sells at £2.99, well under half the cost of an average Fringe ticket, with a risk-free taster available in the no-cost version “iFringe Free”. The initial response has been overwhelming, with almost a thousand downloads before the Festival has even begun. Working with many of the Festival’s biggest stake-holders, iFringe looks set to achieve its mission: to guide the world’s Festival-lovers to the Fringe’s hidden gems.

Find out more at the websites of iFringe and The Edinburgh Fringe Podcast, or get in touch.

This press release hit the wires today. The Edinburgh Fringe Show from The Podcast NEtwork is part of the new Festival media Network. I’ll let the release give you all the details:

25th August 2006 – Edinburgh. The leading online media publications have reached an agreement to collaborate their energies at future Edinburgh Festival Fringes. Under the banner of the “Festival Media Network,” Broadway Baby, The Podcast Network, Whispered Prompt, FestivalPreviews.com and other interested parties will present a single voice to organisations and promote the use of new online technologies to cover the Fringe in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the world.

“It’s great that we can all work together, and send out a positive message that online media does work and can achieve a common goal, whilst retaining an individual identity,” said Pete Shaw, Publisher of Broadway Baby.

“Our goal includes growing the Festival’s audience to the global village,” says Ewan Spence, Executive Director at The Podcast Network. “You don’t need to be in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe.”

Ian Smith from FestivalPreviews.com commented that “millions of people already use the web to discover the Fringe. We are delighted to be a part of this organisation which will boost the experience of visitors.”

Over the coming months the various organisations will be refining their plans and liasing with promoters, venues, theatre companies and the Festival Fringe Society to ensure that the Fringe in 2007 will be as revolutionary online as the Edinburgh Festival became 60 years ago.

Edinburgh and London, 31 July 2006 – The Stage, the UK’s trade publication for the entertainment world has partnered with The Podcast Network to bring the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to hundreds of thousands of listeners around the world.

The BAFTA nominated Edinburgh Fringe Podcast will be freely available to anyone with an internet connection. New editions of the show will be available to listen to on both The Stage’s and The Podcast Network’s websites and also by saving the MP3 file to your computer, subscribing to the show via iTunes, or adding it to any Podcast downloading application.

“Podcasting has the ability to reach out to people with very specific interests, something that The Stage has been doing for the performing arts community since 1880,” points out Scott Matthewman, Assistant Editor of The Stage. “The daily podcast is the perfect complement to our print and web coverage of this year’s fringe, and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to team up with the specialists at The Podcast Network for our first venture into this field.”

“Last year, the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast reached around the world, bringing the largest arts festival to audiences far in excess of any single stage in Scotland’s capital city,” points out Ewan Spence, Executive Producer at The Podcast Network. “I’m over the moon that The Stage has come on board with the Podcast. The Stage has a long tradition of being the bible for the performing arts world in the UK. With their support, the show will be able to feature more guests, news, interviews and content from around Edinburgh.”

The Podcast Network itself has been at the forefront of commercial Podcasting since February 2005 and has almost seventy shows, all freely available, covering a wide range of topics and genres, including technology news, sports, the arts, death and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Stage has been publishing its weekly newspaper serving the entertainment industry continuously since 1880. Following a successful relaunch of the paper and website earlier this year, the company is producing a free Essential Guide to the Fringe, available in venues all over Edinburgh.

For Immediate Release.

Ewan Spence’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe Podcast notched up a number of firsts in 2005. Now he can add another to it, with a nomination from BAFTA Scotland for the Best Interactive Media Award, 2005.

The nomination is a major endorsement of the new emerging medium of podcasting. “A year ago, nobody really knew what Podcasting was,” says Spence, “and now the genre will be represented in one of Scotland’s largest media awards.”

Thousands of people from around the world turned to Spence’s podcasts to find the hottest shows and discover what happened at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His one-man show accessed via The Podcast Network (www.thepodcastnetwork.com), had listeners in Edinburgh and across the globe waiting eagerly every morning for the latest news, interviews and reviews from Scotland’s capital.

Podcasting is a brand new medium that broadly follows the format of a radio show and can feature news, interviews, music, etc. However, instead of being broadcast live ‘over the air’, podcasts are available on the Internet, for listeners to download and enjoy on their iPods, PC’s or MP3 players, in their own time and wherever they happen to be.

The Fringe Podcast is the perfect example of Citizen Journalism – where one person takes on an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, and distributing news and information from an event, leveraging the power of the Internet to create an international daily show accessible by millions of people worldwide.

“With just an MP3 recorder, a copy of the Fringe Programme and a mobile phone, Ewan’s Edinburgh Fringe Podcast produced a huge amount of high quality audio programming over August,” says Cameron Reilly, co-founder of The Podcast Network. “With those basic resources, Ewan broke new ground as the first podcast to cover a non-technical conference of this scale. He increased the reach of the event to thousands of people all around the world, showcasing upcoming acts and new talent on a stage far larger than anything Edinburgh alone could provide.”

Spence continues to produce and host a weekly podcast of unsigned rock music (TPN Rock), and will be attending the upcoming Portable Media Expo in Ontario, California to continue promoting The Podcast Network.

The Podcast Network launches first independent audio coverage of the Fringe

Edinburgh, August 2, 2005: – Ewan Spence and The Podcast Network have launched The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Podcast – http://edinburghfringe.thepodcastnetwork.com/ – an internet based talk show reporting on the world’s largest festival. The show, delivered directly to people’s computers, iPods, phones and MP3 players, will be available daily from August 8th throughout the Festival. A Fringe Preview show was aired on Monday 1st August, and is already gathering critical acclaim from listeners around the world.

Fans of the Edinburgh Fringe, no matter where they are, will be able to see and hear what’s going on in Scotland’s capital in August. With a team of dedicated reviewers, interviews galore, and a dash of magic, the Fringe Podcast gives people at the Fringe a backstage pass in their pocket that they can listen to whenever and wherever they are. And if they’re not at the Fringe, they can find out just what they’re missing, as The Podcast Network team takes you to the performances and artists that everyone wants to get to.

“The Edinburgh Fringe Podcast is a unique service for people attending the Fringe,” says Spence. “Everyone we have spoken to, from performers and venues, to media analysts and listeners is incredibly excited about this global, yet local, Edinburgh Fringe Podcast. We have been given an unprecedented level of support from those involved in the Fringe for what is, essentially, a brand new media venture. I’m confident that as well as providing an invaluable resource for visitors to the Fringe, Podcast Network listeners from as far afield as South Africa, Iraq, North Korea, Hawaii and throughout the world , can now enjoy the best of the Fringe every day.”

Alongside the daily audio content, the Edinburgh Fringe website will carry constantly updated news and photos from the Fringe, be it surprise performances, the wacky publicity stunts the Fringe is famous for, show reviews, profiles and interviews with performers. With the rise of camera phones, the Podcast Network team can snap pictures and have them published on the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast website in a matter of seconds through a partnership with Moblog.co.uk.

“What the Edinburgh Fringe podcast is showing is that through an integrated attitude to reporting, with immediacy at its core, journalism may never be the same,” says Alfie Dennen, of Moblog.co.uk. “Being able to marry the audio from a podcast to images and video captured with a mobile phone makes the experience that much more engaging, and give us all a sense of what it’s like at the Fringe right now.”

Booming growth in demand for innovative audio programming has resulted in startling expansion for new media company The Podcast Network. Launched mid-February to capitalise on a global explosion of portable audio players such as the iPod, the month of July saw the network deliver a quarter of a million shows to one hundred thousand listeners. That’s one show downloaded every eleven seconds.

“I think Ewan’s Edinburgh Fringe Podcast for The Podcast Network is a great example of how an emerging technology, designed initially by geeks and for geeks, can benefit the wider community. They are hungry for quality free content that they can listen to when, and where they want.” says Mick Stanic, Co-Founder of The Podcast Network. “This show is a great example of Generation C, which is all about people being able to create and distribute compelling content to like minded individuals around the world.”

The first Edinburgh Fringe Podcast is available now at http://edinburghfringe.thepodcastnetwork.com/ and the daily shows start on August 8th, and continue through the Fringe until August 27th.
