Even if you were there, you can;t have seen as much as Ewan Spence: if it’s good, he’s covered it with on-the-spot interviews.

I love the fact that it’s pitched as a catch-up service, almost a Fringe+1 (which seems in vouge in TV land at the moment) and is listed after the Fringe is all over, but of course all the Fringe podcasts are archived, so you can relive the month whenever you like. (Thanks to Scott at The Stage for picking up the mention and snapping a pic; and he also points out the other two podcasts are from a Radio Times writer, and the BBC themselves, so I’m the single indie).

I’m pretty pleased about this - after sitting at #11 and #12 for most of last week, the podcast broke into the Top Ten podcasts in the iTunes Arts section this morning. Given that last year’s peak was #11 part of me can let out a sigh of relief that this year has kept enough interest to feature that highly again!

And, for one brief glorious moment, I’m ahead of the mighty Mugglecast. Wheeeee!!!! Don’t forget you can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes, and you can also leave a review of the show with Apple as well, which would very much be appreciated.

(Okay, back out into the Fringe with the microphone. There are still seven podcasts above me).

It might still be early days (ie about half way through week one), but the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast is the top ranked Edinburgh Fringe Podcast in iTunes. Currently sitting at number 24, I’m going to be very interested to see how high it climbs. For those of you looking for a one click subscription in iTunes for the podcast, here is the iTunes link.

Edinburgh Fringe Podcast, #24 in iTunes (click for full screen)

So a big thank you to everyone who’s helping with the pdocast, including The Stagec, Comedy365, Broadway Baby, and all you listeners out there in MP3 land. Now, one more little favour - if you have subscribed in iTunes, why not consider leaving a review of the podcast with Apple?

Update: Make that #14…

But then Brian Luff from Comedy 365 - one of this years Edinburgh Fringe Show partners - called to say he was in the Pleasance Courtyard and would i care awfully to partake in drink.

Brian, you had me at ‘Pleasance.’

And with that, a few calls, a twitter or two, and a night of top class comedy and craich was on.

I have to hand it to the team at St George’s West; one of the Assembly Rooms venues for this year. The theatre space in the converted church has only one main door into the auditorium. And the great thing about it is that it opens up on the stage.

Atually, after thinking about this, I’m not so sure that it is a good idea. First of all, while it means there aren’t going to be any late arrivals, it also means that there’s no nipping out if you need to go to the toilet - or do the ultimate Fringe review and walk out of the show. Unless you feel like going straight over the stage; and even with the diminishing British reserve, that’s unlikely to happen.

My brain says it’s probably the only way the venue can work, but the devious part of me is thinking it’s a great way to placate the audiences!

And so… it begins…

Yes, The Edinburgh Fringe has started, and the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast from The Podcast Network is going to be with you throughout August, taking you behind the scenes, finding the big stories, and uncovering the hidden gems of theatre, music, comedy, and the arts in general.

In this first full show, I speak to the new Director for the Fringe Jon Morgan. A dark horse candidate for the job, he’s got a huge project ahead of him not just for this year, but for years to come. And why does he want to take the Fringe to the Kyle of Lochalsh? Following that, last years’ If.comedy winner Phil Nichol talks about his comedy, and his theatre roles, and why he’s left it to late to become a lawyer.

I know I’ve always said that the show is around 30 minutes long, and today’s show is, well, a bit longer, but both Jon and Phil have managed to capture some of the core essences of the Fringe, that I decided to leave the interviews as extended length. It happens occasionally!

Do feel free to leave your comments in the website or email me on ewanspence@gmail.com.

Yes, as well as the first little prologue going up on The Podcast Network’s Edinburgh Fringe Show’s website (and RSS Feed) the buzz is building in other places as well. The Fringe Podcast comes but once a year, but covering an Arts Festival with over 250 venues (maybe the best part of 300 stages), for around 1,900 shows, 18,000 performers and countless numbers of audience members is a big undertaking. Now in it’s third year (the podcast, not the Fringe itself) It’s nice to see the partnerships evolving (more on that later) but also recognition from other areas.

For example, in The Times, the podcast was listed as “The Best Edinburgh Fringe Podcast:”

Produced in association with The Stage and The Podcast Network, last year’s Edinburgh Fringe show podcast was so good that it was nominated for a Scottish Bafta [Actually for the 2005 Run, but what's a year between the British Acadamey and me - Ewan]. This year it returns under the auspices of Ewan Spence, who will report live in a daily 30-minute show running throughout the four weeks of the Fringe. It will contain “interviews, reviews and gossip from the funniest festival in the world”. Also promised are colour pieces and some audio tours around the city all produced in a specially created “mobile studio.”

There’s also a long form interview piece in the current Podcast User Magazine (Issue #19) which is worth reading - and the rest of the magazine as well!

What Prompted You To Cover The Fringe?
The first one was back in 2005. I’d just moved back to Edinburgh from London. The Fringe was there, and I went, “Yeah , let’s do it!” …There was also the fact that it hadn’t been done before. And, part of it was the challenge. I think the big part was, can one man take an event as large as that, cover it, report it, present it, be entertaining about it, to make people want to listen to a show about it?

What Is Your Target Audience For The Podcast?
There are two goals. If you are at the Fringe, it’s like having a backstage pass. And if you’re not at the Fringe, it’s going to make you jealous as anything. And I can get those two goals out, I know I’ve got a good show.

Praise both from inside the circle of podcasters, and from the external big boys of traditional media. Lovely! Now let’s see how well I survive August. expect the first full show within 24 hours

Well, now that I’m (almsot) recovered from the SXSW / ETech podcasting trip in March, the next biggie on the horizon needs addressing, that of the BAFTA nominated Edinburgh Festival Fringe Podcast. Last year’s Fringe saw Edinburgh host to on the order of 1800 different shows, and close to 16,000 performers - plus everyone who wanted to come to the Capital to see aforesaid shows.

The podcast, a daily 30 minute show, will run, as previous years, throughout the four weeks of the Festival, with news, interviews, colour pieces and some audio tours around the city. And that needs a lot of planning, liasing with promoters, venues, stars, up and coming acts, and a whole host of tiny little things that will come together to make a great show.

Two major items are now in place. The first is a title sponsor, which allows me a bit of flexibility in the four weeks to do what I need to do. The second is studio recording space. Last year I used the Leith FM studios to talk to the majority of the guests on the show, and having a single location makes it a lot easier. This year, with Leith FM actually broadcasting, that option isn’t available - so I’ve been talking to the central venues in Edinburgh to create a ‘mobile studio’ for the Fringe Podcast. I finsihed discussions on this today, successfully I might add, and I’ll be based in the centre of the Fringe action.

The Podcast Network and myself will make a more official announcement on these in due course, but one thing is for sure. The Fringe Podcast is definitly on for a third year.

With one difference (touch wood)… I’m not planning to move house this year.

This press release hit the wires today. The Edinburgh Fringe Show from The Podcast NEtwork is part of the new Festival media Network. I’ll let the release give you all the details:

25th August 2006 - Edinburgh. The leading online media publications have reached an agreement to collaborate their energies at future Edinburgh Festival Fringes. Under the banner of the “Festival Media Network,” Broadway Baby, The Podcast Network, Whispered Prompt, FestivalPreviews.com and other interested parties will present a single voice to organisations and promote the use of new online technologies to cover the Fringe in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the world.

“It’s great that we can all work together, and send out a positive message that online media does work and can achieve a common goal, whilst retaining an individual identity,” said Pete Shaw, Publisher of Broadway Baby.

“Our goal includes growing the Festival’s audience to the global village,” says Ewan Spence, Executive Director at The Podcast Network. “You don’t need to be in Edinburgh to enjoy the Fringe.”

Ian Smith from FestivalPreviews.com commented that “millions of people already use the web to discover the Fringe. We are delighted to be a part of this organisation which will boost the experience of visitors.”

Over the coming months the various organisations will be refining their plans and liasing with promoters, venues, theatre companies and the Festival Fringe Society to ensure that the Fringe in 2007 will be as revolutionary online as the Edinburgh Festival became 60 years ago.

You get to the gallery and the first impression is of a quiet and nice neighbourhood. Then you enter. Up to the first floor you are immediately hit by the bright, lively and simplistic paintings of Leif Sylvester, a Danish painter and all round artist. It is indeed a very fitting exhibition for a festival, and your mood is immediately turned up a few notches.

Not all paintings are of equally joyful themes, but you realize even a telling to, as portrayed in one painting, and the theme of the painting named “Teacher Torture”, are manageable when presented like this: Dots, lines, stripes, checks, pastels, black, drips and precise lines – most on every painting too – makes for a new experience all of Sylvester’s making.

Combined with some skilfully crafted pottery two artists (one young award winning Marco Friis) in the entrance hall, it’s well worth the trip that wee bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Free at The Danish Cultural Institute, 3 Doune Terrace weekdays from 9am-5pm

Fringe sells over 1.35 million tickets worth more than £10 million for
28,000 performances by 17,000 artists at 261 venues. Trying to keep up with
all that\'s going on is a superhuman effort, but one good way of doing so
(whether you are at the event or looking on from afar) is by means of the
Edinburgh Fringe Podcast Network. It has lots of reviews, newsposts,
interviews, blogs and - for those who prefer to listen to get their
information verbally - there is a daily &quot;Podcast&quot; which can be heard on the
site. Or download a half-hour show each day in mp3 format and transfer it
to your iPod so you can hear about the Fringe perhaps as you race between
shows. Last year, the Podcast Network was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA
award, which shows it is much appreciated. See

Glasgow\’s festival of piping returns next week with the best in Scottish

best in Scottish and International piping talent arrives to perform in
outdoor spaces and venues throughout Glasgow City Centre for this uniquely
Scottish event. Next Saturday, the World Pipe Band Championship will take

the most coveted title. See also <a onclick\u003d\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\" href\u003d\"http://www.pipingfestival.co.uk/\" target\u003d_blank>http://www.pipingfestival.co.uk/

It’s basically going crazy here. Was in the studio today and managed three interviews and two ‘accoustic’ recordings, and then broke to go to three press launches - where the venus show you 5-10 minutes of their best shows. So it’s almost like a greatest hits package. Definitly a few shows I must see now (Tapeire springs to mind), and some that showed promsie that don’t seem to live up to it.

Oh and Mike McShane (Talk Radio) stopping me because I was using the reliable Psion Series 5mx, proclaiming that he hadn’t seen another one since he run over his with his car in LA. And thanks to that introduction, I should be able to get him on the podcast in the near future as well.

So a typical Fringe. Made more so by the rain that poured down after two weeks of sunshine.

“Last year, the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast reached around the world, bringing the largest arts festival to audiences far in excess of any single stage in Scotland’s capital city,” points out Ewan Spence, Executive Producer at The Podcast Network. “I’m over the moon that The Stage has come on board with the Podcast. The Stage has a long tradition of being the bible for the performing arts world in the UK. With their support, the show will be able to feature more guests, news, interviews and content from around Edinburgh.”

The Podcast Network itself has been at the forefront of commercial Podcasting since February 2005 and has almost seventy shows, all freely available, covering a wide range of topics and genres, including technology news, sports, the arts, death and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Stage has been publishing its weekly newspaper serving the entertainment industry continuously since 1880. Following a successful relaunch of the paper and website earlier this year, the company is producing a free Essential Guide to the Fringe, available in venues all over Edinburgh.

So I take it as a compliment this year that all the staff on the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast that needed Press Accreditation for 2006 have been granted it.

…and putting it back together again! That was today’s goal. While I still have my portable recording setup to conduct interviews in situ, this year the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast will be recording at the studios of Leith FM. Which is a bit of a step up from using the little Behringer I normally have for solo podcasting.

There’s a nice big board, four or five mics to control, the jingle boxes and CD players, and of course even more imnputs if I want to capture some live music. All of that is going to come into play during August. I’ll get some pictures of the Studio once it stars to fill up with the stars of this years Fringe, but for now, I need to go out and get another cable for the compressor - everything else is ready. Which is good, because I’m about to start the studio interviews tomorrow!

So, as well as bringing you the best of The Fringe, I might be stepping out on stage!

One of the most popular shows at the Bedlam Theatre (venue 49) is the almost always sold out “Improverts” improvised comedy troupe. This is how they describe themselves…

Scotland’s longest-running improv comedy show and an Edinburgh institution, the Improverts are an unmissable fringe experience. Presenting the best improvisational talent, the quick-witted players use only audience suggestions to create scenes and sketches before your very eyes, based on the techniques made famous by TV’s ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’. No plan, no script, complete spontaneity guaranteed- and that means a different show every night! Come along armed with your suggestions for a night of original, entertaining humour.

Having spoken to Brian, the director of the show, I’l be attending their last few rehersals before the Fringe starts. At the end of that, I’ll be judged, almost Reality TV style, on how I perform. And if it’s a thumbs up, I’ll be going on stage as one of the Improverts and making my theatrical debut at The Fringe!

Nerve racking? For sure, but I’m sure that it’s going to make some great podcasting, as you all follow me on my journey from the streets to the Stage. I’ll probably run this adventures over a couple of episodes of the podcast. If you’ve not yet added the RSS Feed to your podcatcher, then point it towards http://edinburghfringe.thepodcastnetwork.com/feed/

One of the things I’m glad to announce about this years Fringe Show is that once the Fringe starts, you’ll be able to get a new show every day. Last year, I took Sundays off (to catch up on little things like sleep, moving house, and to get away from the editing suite for a few hours!) and while I’ll be doing that again this year, I’m pleased to announce that a dedicated Sunday show will be available.

The “Sunday Funky Supplement” will be hosted by Stewart Lochhead. In his words, you (and me) are to expect the unexpected as he brings his long experience of working in theatre, radio, and the music business since 1962 to bear on the Fringe.

The regular guests for the Funky Supplement are Bob Flynn and Gay Bell. Bob is a print journalist with years of Fringe review experience. He will come direct from completing copy deadlines for the Guardian, Independent, Times and Herald to deliver his fresh and opinionated reviews. Bob makes his living reviewing film, music, theatre and the arts and brings a professional eye from the mainstream media to the show.

Gay Bell is a musician (formerly of the Twin Sets, now in 101 Damnations) and brings years of experience and contacts in the Edinburgh music scene to Funky Supplement. More recently she has performed in Fringe cabaret and sang last year at The Stand in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. She previously trod the boards in the Fringe play ‘The Only Woman in a Cast of Naked Young Men’, a playing the parts of Opera Singer, Woman at a Funeral and Hooker, involving some nifty costume changes. She and her sister will be singing in the cabaret ‘Heaven and Hell’ in the Cafe Royal Bistro on 30th of September.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the show, not only because it’ll be the frist time I get to listen to a Fringe podcast that I’ve not edited myself, but also because the Fringe is such a diverse range of talent and people, everyone has a different opinion on what worth the ticket price, and what isn’t. Stewart’s lunchtime show on Leith FM always had a way of looking at things slightly differntly to the norm, and I’m expecting the Funky Supplement to do the same with the Fringe.

So I visited Bedlam today, which is the theatre run by the Edinburgh University Theatre Group. They’ve a packed programme of fifteen shows this year, and there are some really interesting things happening - and I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about them as the podcast start rolling out on the RSS feed. For the moment, have a look at the shows they’ve got on…

If the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast was a movie, then I’d not onlybe deep in pre-production just now, but right in the middle of negotiating with the Hollywood Agents to try and convince Dan Ackroyd to play opposite Brian Blessed (now there’s a Fringe Show I’d love to see).

Yes I’m talking about all the horse trading with agents and PR and acts to get them into the studio for an interview. And while you might think that with the number of performers that are at the Fring they’d all be looking for anything to promote the show, there’s still a certain sense of trepidation in doing something that’s not 100% proven to put bums on seats. So part of the management is to talk to people and show them that the show is worthwhile, and there’ll be benefits for the artists both for visibility at the Fringe, and in a global sense as well.

And that means doing some horse trading with groups of acts to get the interviews I think the show needs - and I’m really enjoying the chase just now.

And in other news, looks like I’ll be able to make some big announcements next week regarding the podcast, so watch the blog!

Pre-prodcution on the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast is going on right now, and it’s a bit more involved than most of the other podcasts I do. The main thing that holds the Fringe podcast together may be the host of the show, but most of you will be listening for the people that I’ll be interviewing. ANd this is where the planning can make all the difference.

Last year, most of the interviews were done with the performers after a show. And while it meant the show was fresh in my mind, it probably wasn’t as fair on the performer as I could make it. There were also a lot of last minute changes, cancellations and delays - which isn’t good all round.

This year, I’m planning it a bit differently. The rule of thumb will be that all interviews will be done in the morning periond (roughly 10am to about 2 or 3pm), then I’ll grab a late lunch, and spend the rest of the day going round shows, reviewing the acts, and generally picking up the buzz and trying to find ‘the next reasonably big thing.’

And one of the reasons that this is possible is because the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast has dedicated recording studio space for the duration of the Fringe. Leith FM will be acting both as an interview base, but many of the volunteers are coming out to help with the reviews as well!

…just like the end of every James Bond movie proclaims that the hero will return, your podcast guide to the best of the Fringe is coming back for 2006.

Since the start of April, I’ve been getting emails asking the same thing - “are you doing your podcast from The Edinburgh Fringe this year?” Well, after a little bit of consideration, and given the upswell of support from the unknown (to me) listeners who have taken the time to email me, and that the show managed to gather a BAFTA nomination last year… The Edinburgh Fringe Podcast will return this year.

That means the planning has started in earnest, and that means a million bits and pieces of paper being thrown around, a list a mile long of PR contacts, acts, theatre troops, agents, celebrities, the small hidden show that’s going to be huge… and trying to spot all of these early enough enough that I can program them into the show.

Even after a day or two of planning the show is looking very healthy. One act as has signed on to appear in a number of shows throughout the run, I’m taking to some others to create some more ‘running features’ to provide a bit more continuity through the month of daily shows. On top of those there’lll be the daily interviews with some of the bigger (and smaller) shows, news from around the Fringe, the blog, the pictures.

Ooh, it’s going to be fun - it’s still a scary undertaking, but I don’t think it’ll be a completely one man show this time. The site, as last year, is still http://edinburghfringe.thepodcastnetwork.com/ and this is the RSS feed. All of last year’s shows are still archived, so you can listen to my interview technique from a year ago!

A big welcome to everyone coming along to the Fringe Podcast site - we’re all incredibly happy we’ve been nominated for a BAFTA from Bafta Scotland. All teh podcasts for the Fringe show are archived (hit the banner at the top there), or if you subscribe to the feed you should have all of them pulled into your reader. If you’re looking for more of my own podcasts (after all, The Fringe happens just once a year), then head over to TPN Rock, where I host a weekly music podcast that showcases unknown and unsigned rock bands - rather like the showcase of new talent that the Fringe had to offer!

Take some time to browse round all the other TPN (The Podcast Network) shows, which are listed on the sidebar. The Awards Ceremony for the Bafta is on Sunday 13th November.

For Immediate Release.

Ewan Spence’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe Podcast notched up a number of firsts in 2005. Now he can add another to it, with a nomination from BAFTA Scotland for the Best Interactive Media Award, 2005.

The nomination is a major endorsement of the new emerging medium of podcasting. “A year ago, nobody really knew what Podcasting was,” says Spence, “and now the genre will be represented in one of Scotland’s largest media awards.”

Thousands of people from around the world turned to Spence’s podcasts to find the hottest shows and discover what happened at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His one-man show accessed via The Podcast Network (www.thepodcastnetwork.com), had listeners in Edinburgh and across the globe waiting eagerly every morning for the latest news, interviews and reviews from Scotland’s capital.

Podcasting is a brand new medium that broadly follows the format of a radio show and can feature news, interviews, music, etc. However, instead of being broadcast live ‘over the air’, podcasts are available on the Internet, for listeners to download and enjoy on their iPods, PC’s or MP3 players, in their own time and wherever they happen to be.

The Fringe Podcast is the perfect example of Citizen Journalism – where one person takes on an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, and distributing news and information from an event, leveraging the power of the Internet to create an international daily show accessible by millions of people worldwide.

“With just an MP3 recorder, a copy of the Fringe Programme and a mobile phone, Ewan’s Edinburgh Fringe Podcast produced a huge amount of high quality audio programming over August,” says Cameron Reilly, co-founder of The Podcast Network. “With those basic resources, Ewan broke new ground as the first podcast to cover a non-technical conference of this scale. He increased the reach of the event to thousands of people all around the world, showcasing upcoming acts and new talent on a stage far larger than anything Edinburgh alone could provide.”

Spence continues to produce and host a weekly podcast of unsigned rock music (TPN Rock), and will be attending the upcoming Portable Media Expo in Ontario, California to continue promoting The Podcast Network.

Not sure how much I agree with this one. Guides to the best shows at the Fringe abound over Edinburgh (both in the press and in the competition to see who can get their poster the highest up the lamp-posts in Bristo Square), so at first glance the official Fringe ‘Text Vote’ is a good idea. At every show you get a little card, asking you to text your star rating so the list can be compiled. All very nice. How much does it cost?

Well, there’s no indication on the Fringe website page. It is on the card (in very small type), but the Hairline Fringe site makes it more explicit. 25p per text that goes to “supporting the Fringe.”

The Edinburgh Fringe. Never one to turn down a financial incentive.

Dancing in the style of your dad at a wedding, comedians Jupp, Murphy and Ker take the stage to perform a series of sketches which veer away from tried-and-tested comedy staples. Expected punch-lines are cunningly replaced by unusual twists in a show which tests the comedic range and endurance of the performers, but pleasingly not that of the audience.

Within the show the three comics take on roles as teachers playing ‘good cop, bad cop’ with a primary school troublemaker; war veterans reciting inappropriate limericks, and a chat-line lover for a lonely housewife. Each scenario is so different from the last that the audience is kept guessing as to where the next laugh will come from, and are handsomely rewarded for their efforts.

The show’s humour is just dark enough to appeal to the seasoned Fringe goer and varied enough to engage the attention and amusement of a newcomer. This is comedy which does not portend to be something it is not. It is light entertainment, simply packaged and aimed to gain laughs, but with enough extra to give it the edge on other sketch shows.

“Where was I?… No, we’ve done racism – I did that already….”

“Do you have a script? Because this is getting tiring.”

Reminding us that this would not be a show of her father’s comedy, Rain Pryor’s warning was only too apparent as she lost her train of thought and struggled to fill the ensuing silence as her father would easily have done.

Scripting issues aside Pryor’s first Fringe nerves began to fade as she confidently recreated the highs and lows of her life as the black and Jewish daughter of late comedy giant Richard Pryor. Unfortunately, for much of the show there was a sense that ‘you just had to be there’ to find the situations relived amusing. As interesting as an insight into her childhood is, this show was not billed as ‘An Audience with Rain Pryor’ but rather a stand-up show, and the audience were left wondering as to whether there was sufficient fodder to meet this end.

Pryor’s character comedy was perhaps the strongest element of the show as she brought to life some of the most influential people in her life, in particular her black militant mother trapped in a white Jewish woman’s body. Most successful were the words in Pryor’s stories which related childhood experiences common to all – teasing at school, sneaking out of the house on a Friday night. These moments helped Pryor to recover from dismal turns such as an extended cheerleading song, in the face of which a bemused crowd sheepishly participated.

In the opening lines of her show Pryor gave warning to those that had come to see a replication of her father: “Perhaps you should go out and buy one of his DVDs. That way you won’t be disappointed.” Unfortunately on the back of her performance this can only be seen as wise advice.

Who: The Parker Entertainment Company: Rain Pryor – Fried Chicken and Latkes
Where: Smirnoff Baby Belly
When: 20:00-20:55; 4th-28th August (except 15th)

Donnacadh originally trained as an actor and has worked as a theatre director and teacher in Dublin and London. Since leaving Drama School he has directed over twenty productions and has an MA I Classical Acting from the Central School of Speech and Drama. Last year brought Blue Velvet the Gilded Balloon and this year premiers a new play, Hush, by Samantha Wright at the Pleasance Dome.

I’m a fourth year English Literature undergraduate at Edinburgh University currently trying to get my foot in journalism’s door. Having worked The Fringe last year for about 2 an hour, I decided that 2005 was going to be the year I was one of the beautiful people sipping Magners in the Spiegeltent rather than slogging my guts out. My interests Fringe-wise are music, verbose comedians and dodgy theatre groups performing Shakespeare. Outside of the Festivals (is there such a place?) I’m a fan of football, travel and a nice gin and tonic.

I am a 20-something grumpy old man and the presenter of Tripcast Radio. Also a full time computing student and part time phone monkey working for ‘the man’. I enjoy the fringe every year, and thought rather than just lauging and enjoying the shows this year, I’d tell everyone else about them too.

He has actively followed the development of mobile technology and Internet media publishing since studying Computing and Artificial Intelligence at Edinburgh University. He left his role as an IT Support Team Manager in April 2004 to work full time on a number of successful technology websites and start-ups.

You have The Jolly Judge on the Royal Mile (Map) and All Good on Morrison Street (Map). So if your in Edinburgh and want to hook up with this podcast, take your laptop down there and download us. Of couse, if you know any other free WiFi spots, then please leave a comment for us and our listners.

Edit: I have since found 2 extra sites that have lots of free WiFi nodes around the city, so now you have no excuse to not download the Edinburgh Fringe show wherever you are! They are NodeDB and Consume. By the looks of it, most are free to access (but if some are in pubs and resturants, please don’t abuse access and at least buy a pint!)
