Even if you were there, you can;t have seen as much as Ewan Spence: if it’s good, he’s covered it with on-the-spot interviews.

I love the fact that it’s pitched as a catch-up service, almost a Fringe+1 (which seems in vouge in TV land at the moment) and is listed after the Fringe is all over, but of course all the Fringe podcasts are archived, so you can relive the month whenever you like. (Thanks to Scott at The Stage for picking up the mention and snapping a pic; and he also points out the other two podcasts are from a Radio Times writer, and the BBC themselves, so I’m the single indie).

Yes, as well as the first little prologue going up on The Podcast Network’s Edinburgh Fringe Show’s website (and RSS Feed) the buzz is building in other places as well. The Fringe Podcast comes but once a year, but covering an Arts Festival with over 250 venues (maybe the best part of 300 stages), for around 1,900 shows, 18,000 performers and countless numbers of audience members is a big undertaking. Now in it’s third year (the podcast, not the Fringe itself) It’s nice to see the partnerships evolving (more on that later) but also recognition from other areas.

For example, in The Times, the podcast was listed as “The Best Edinburgh Fringe Podcast:”

Produced in association with The Stage and The Podcast Network, last year’s Edinburgh Fringe show podcast was so good that it was nominated for a Scottish Bafta [Actually for the 2005 Run, but what's a year between the British Acadamey and me - Ewan]. This year it returns under the auspices of Ewan Spence, who will report live in a daily 30-minute show running throughout the four weeks of the Fringe. It will contain “interviews, reviews and gossip from the funniest festival in the world”. Also promised are colour pieces and some audio tours around the city all produced in a specially created “mobile studio.”

There’s also a long form interview piece in the current Podcast User Magazine (Issue #19) which is worth reading - and the rest of the magazine as well!

What Prompted You To Cover The Fringe?
The first one was back in 2005. I’d just moved back to Edinburgh from London. The Fringe was there, and I went, “Yeah , let’s do it!” …There was also the fact that it hadn’t been done before. And, part of it was the challenge. I think the big part was, can one man take an event as large as that, cover it, report it, present it, be entertaining about it, to make people want to listen to a show about it?

What Is Your Target Audience For The Podcast?
There are two goals. If you are at the Fringe, it’s like having a backstage pass. And if you’re not at the Fringe, it’s going to make you jealous as anything. And I can get those two goals out, I know I’ve got a good show.

Praise both from inside the circle of podcasters, and from the external big boys of traditional media. Lovely! Now let’s see how well I survive August. expect the first full show within 24 hours

Well, now that I’m (almsot) recovered from the SXSW / ETech podcasting trip in March, the next biggie on the horizon needs addressing, that of the BAFTA nominated Edinburgh Festival Fringe Podcast. Last year’s Fringe saw Edinburgh host to on the order of 1800 different shows, and close to 16,000 performers - plus everyone who wanted to come to the Capital to see aforesaid shows.

The podcast, a daily 30 minute show, will run, as previous years, throughout the four weeks of the Festival, with news, interviews, colour pieces and some audio tours around the city. And that needs a lot of planning, liasing with promoters, venues, stars, up and coming acts, and a whole host of tiny little things that will come together to make a great show.

Two major items are now in place. The first is a title sponsor, which allows me a bit of flexibility in the four weeks to do what I need to do. The second is studio recording space. Last year I used the Leith FM studios to talk to the majority of the guests on the show, and having a single location makes it a lot easier. This year, with Leith FM actually broadcasting, that option isn’t available - so I’ve been talking to the central venues in Edinburgh to create a ‘mobile studio’ for the Fringe Podcast. I finsihed discussions on this today, successfully I might add, and I’ll be based in the centre of the Fringe action.

The Podcast Network and myself will make a more official announcement on these in due course, but one thing is for sure. The Fringe Podcast is definitly on for a third year.

With one difference (touch wood)… I’m not planning to move house this year.

A big welcome to readers of Scottish Snippets on Rampant Scotland, one of the largest mailing lists and websites for people interested in Scotland.

Edinburgh Fringe Underway

The world’s biggest arts festival gets underway on Sunday with the Edinburgh Cavalcade, an inter-festival parade as performers, floats and<!-- D(["mb","marching bagpipers make their way through the streets of the Capital. The
Fringe sells over 1.35 million tickets worth more than £10 million for
28,000 performances by 17,000 artists at 261 venues. Trying to keep up with
all that\'s going on is a superhuman effort, but one good way of doing so
(whether you are at the event or looking on from afar) is by means of the
Edinburgh Fringe Podcast Network. It has lots of reviews, newsposts,
interviews, blogs and - for those who prefer to listen to get their
information verbally - there is a daily &quot;Podcast&quot; which can be heard on the
site. Or download a half-hour show each day in mp3 format and transfer it
to your iPod so you can hear about the Fringe perhaps as you race between
shows. Last year, the Podcast Network was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA
award, which shows it is much appreciated. See

Piping Live!
Glasgow\’s festival of piping returns next week with the best in Scottish
and International piping talent to celebrate the finest current and
emerging piping music. Set to be even bigger and better than last year,
Piping Live! 2006 will feature some of the biggest names in piping, as the
best in Scottish and International piping talent arrives to perform in
outdoor spaces and venues throughout Glasgow City Centre for this uniquely
Scottish event. Next Saturday, the World Pipe Band Championship will take
place again on Glasgow Green, with the top bands competing once again for
the most coveted title. See also <a onclick\u003d\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\" href\u003d\"http://www.pipingfestival.co.uk/\" target\u003d_blank>http://www.pipingfestival.co.uk/

A big welcome to all our visitors from Boing-Boing (we saw the stats, there’s a lot of you). Our preview podcast can be found here. Yes I know Bill Hicks dies in 1994. I would very much love Bill to come back as well. My PDA has a recurring entry marked “Bill met his flying saucer” for Feb 26th. I am of course referring to Bill Hicks -Slight Return, a play that is based on the premise that “The greatest comedian ever returns from the dead for one more show…”

In other links, Scotpod (the site for all things Scottish in the podcasting world) picks up the Fringe Podcast. If anyone can translate this site and the link to the Fringe Podcast, I’d be ever so thankful. Jacek Rutkowski, a well known blogger in mobile circles, perhaps misses the point about a podcast “about some local Scottish Festival.”

Adrian Pegg also picks up the press release, noting that “the largest arts festival in the world now has its own dedicated podcast, available daily from August 8th throughout the Festival.” Adrian also reposted it to the Media UK Discussions board.

Jon Watson (who hosts The Linux User Show) loves the good ideas and energy in the podcasting space. “Quite possibly the biggest thing Ewan is going to take on this year (OK, this quarter) is an attempt to pull an Adam Curry and do a daily 30 minute podcast while he’s at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe… Good luck Ewan, and congratulations on picking something soooo big that perhaps only you could pull it off!”

Well that didn’t take long. Coverage of the Edinburgh Fringe Podcast is coming in from around the internet - we’re going to track the links, snips and clips as we go along. Janne Jalkanen has podcasted an interview with me on his Finnish langauge podcast, Saunan Takka. Thankfully we conducted the interview in English, and it’s a good chance to get into my head a bit more to find out why I’d be doing this.

Martin Little is of the opinion that the Podcast is another small step in my plan of world domination, while Jim Hughes in his rather tounge in cheek Ewan-Watch is lokoing foward me adding my “own twist to the mix.” Corante puts up the ‘album’ cover and a good link back to the site.

Finally Carlo Longino over at Mobhappy reckons that I’ve “cracked the nut of one big problem that plagues a lot of podcasts (just like it does blogs): boring content. Producing a tightly targeted show like this around an event is a great idea, particularly when it can act as a resource for people participating in the festival,” before going on to think about what podcasting and mobile phones could accomplish. You’d probably need a decent hard drive, maybe 4 gig or so, and a WiFi connection in my opinion - which perfectly describes the Nokia N91 coming in Q4 2005.
