[Review] Jimmy James: Divas Dead or Alive
Flamboyant, engaging, jaw-dropping, ascerbic: just some of the adjectives that spring to mind when you see this diminutive star with the giant personality. From Tina Turner to Judy Garland, Cher to Neil Diamond, Jimmy sailed from one diva identity to the next with shimmering ease. His Eartha Kit was unmistakable, his Billie Holiday spooky; Bette Davis was a bawdy riot, my personal favourite, and he can do Barbara Streisand to a T (whether that’s something to aspire to is debatable).He combined fabulous singing with a bit of gentle ridicule, marvelling at the Scots’ ability to drink and singling out the grumpiest looking couple in the audience to terrorise. (”You mean you don’t drink at all? That’s why the show made no sense at all to you!”) He also struck just the right note of camp humility, decribing his performance as “a work in progress”. Go see him, you won’t regret it.
