[Review] Omar Marzouk & Mette Lisby – Cartoon Heroes, Drawing a Line (from Denmark in English)
Mette started this set of “two halves” with an onslaught on cultural foibles in her “comedy of conscience” – a strong start to a solid set including a bit of anthem singing and some very funny physical comedy to really grab everyone.
She displayed guts: The leader of the Taliban should respect his mother as without her he would have been “a sperm cell up a camel’s arse”. And she displayed flair: an early joke about how the German invasion of Denmark had happened with the dropping of fliers to say as much, was later neatly tied in with prolific gospel letter writer Paul: imagine what kind of invasions he could have caused!
Omar was a very different kettle of fish opening this preview night with: “you are going to be my test audience”, “jokes don’t translate well”, and branding himself a bit of “a hate buffet” being Muslim, Danish and speaking with an American accent. A quite unusual way to win over an audience and getting laughs for sure.
With charm Omar soldiered on and got his laughs; some by repeatedly scoring out lesser jokes from his script and some with more self-effacing jokes like “calling all my friends…. but he wasn’t home”.
Any concerns about language skills were misplaced: with a word play on not wanting to run on the tube and risking to be “dead on time”…….Omar is clearly of Egyptian heritage…… he clearly knew English well. It’s his audience and material which need fine tuning…..Still he got close enough to the audience and kindly offered a “thank you” for being his guinea pigs.
