[Review] The Monkey Butlers
If monkeys could be butlers, I imagine they would be a little hit and miss in terms of the service provided. Likewise, The Monkey Butlers show is a little hit and miss when it comes to the comedy served up. There are some real gems in amongst the sketches, but also a few scenes that seem a little overstretched.
All 4 performers, Hal Cruttenden, Zoe Lyons, Caimh McDonnell and Paddy Lennox, have great comic timing and the ability to keep a straight face in all situations (an essential requirement with some of the material). The show takes on a format similar to a TV sketch show, with a fast turnaround of scenes, plenty of visual humour and the same sketches re-visited throughout the show. However, the recurring sketches seem to force some of the material beyond its natural comedy limit. The links between different sketches are also a little haphazard and not terribly effective.
There are some hilarious moments amongst the fast-paced sketches, none of which lasted much longer than 5 minutes. The smarmy daytime TV host squirming under the gaze of a Kirsty Warkesque co-presenter made a wonderful job of poking fun at the condescension and sheer stupidity of daytime telly.
I do have a suspicion that the show would have been far more effective, not to mention entertaining, if it only lasted 30 minutes. Any TV execs out there should take note….
