[Review] The Beginners Guide To The Fringe
With the finest improvisation game that I’ve seen from any Fringe show this year (or in other years) this comedy sketch show is well worth staying up for it’s almost midnight curtain up time. Written and performed by two newcomers to the Fringe, the Beginners Guide to the Fringe is allegedly a show with all the shows, in one show. And while that’s not strictly true, it creates a great framework for an often painfully accurate look at some of the genres the Fringe.
Starting with the assault course of the Royal Mile, Gemma and Paul take on the countless retellings of Shakespeare in different situations (here we have it as a Western, Romy-Ho and Juliet), childrens theatre, improv (see above), poetry readings and stand-up comedy. None of the sketches go on for two long, and while some work better than others, there’s not a single misfire in the hour.
Strangely, there’s no sly digs at Jimmy Carr, which seems to be a feature of every other Fringe show, but that’s not a bad thing. The Beginners Guide to The Fringe is a breath of fresh air. A light comedic touch from two people who know where there strengths lie means this is one guide that veterans as well as beginners should search for.
