[Review] Todd Various, Street Performer
Stand in the middle of a rope circle, start doing something to attract attention,a dn the next thing you know it, you have a hundred people watching your show. It might not be a theatre stage, but a huge part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the sheer number of street performers that come out and attract huge clusters of people and entertain them for half an hour.
I caught up with Todd Various yesterday, a street magician from Detroit (no he doesn’t know Eminem) who managed to grab and hold a crowd like he’d been doing this for years
The magic itself wasn’t the show - although it was a more than workmanlike presentation of cut and restored rope and a classic three cups routine, they were nothing more than props for Todd to work the crowd, who were more than happy to let him use them as the butt of his rather close to the bone humour. With a pantomime level of innuendo, the kids loved the bawdy humour, and the parents could read between the lines for the real joke.
Thirty minutes, and it’s all over. A very very polite way of reminding people that Todd lives on the donations of people who watch his street shows closed the fun.
